Cape Verde weather in June across the islands

On Sal June averages about 26 °C in the afternoon and 22 °C at night, with no measurable rain in the long-term average. Boa Vista is similar. With the wind dropping, the heat is more noticeable than in spring, although sea breezes still take the edge off. Our Sal weather guide shows how the island warms through the summer.

On Santiago, Fogo, São Nicolau and Santo Antão June is still dry; the rains, when they come, arrive from about August. Days are warm in the valleys and pleasant on the heights, and the winter haze is over. Start walks early on Santo Antão or on Fogo, where the climb to the summit is exposed and there is no shade.

The sea around Sal averages about 24 °C in June and keeps warming through the summer. The main trade-wind season, roughly December to May, is over: there are still breezy days for kitesurfers, but lighter winds mean calmer water on more beaches and better conditions for snorkelling and diving. Some exposed beaches on Boa Vista and the north coast of Sal still have strong currents, so check our beach guide before swimming.

The Atlantic hurricane season officially begins on 1 June, but tropical storms near Cape Verde are much more likely from August to October.

Loggerhead turtles begin to nest on Sal and Boa Vista from about mid-June, at the start of a season that runs to around October. Early in the month nesting is sparse, and licensed guided walks are more reliable from July; see turtle watching for the rules, which include no torches, no flash and keeping your distance.

On Santo Antão the feast of São João on 24 June is the big date in Porto Novo, with drumming and the Kola San Jon dance, a tradition also celebrated in Mindelo on São Vicente. In 2026 Praia's Gamboa Festival moved from its usual May slot to 26-28 June because of elections; check the date for future years. Children's Day on 1 June is a public holiday. More ideas in tours.
