Cape Verde at Christmas and New Year: what to expect in 2026/27
A Cape Verde Christmas means 25 °C, a warm sea and a festive season that locals spend with family, at church and, on 31 December, at free concerts in the town squares. This guide explains the weather over the holidays, the traditions, where New Year's Eve is celebrated on Sal, in Mindelo and in Praia, and how to deal with the most expensive weeks of the year.
Cape Verde weather at Christmas
For winter sun with a short flight and no jet lag, Cape Verde at Christmas is one of the most reliable choices within about six hours of the UK. On Sal the average high is about 26 °C in December and 25 °C in January, nights stay around 20-22 °C, and rain is so rare that a passing shower is about the most you can expect. The sea averages around 25 °C in December, warm enough for long swims.
The trade-off is the wind. December opens the breeziest part of the year, so exposed beaches can be sandy in the afternoon and evenings feel fresh: pack a light jumper. Saharan dust can also turn the sky milky for a day or two, the bruma seca. The detail, island by island, is in Cape Verde weather in December, and January is much the same with slightly cooler nights.
How Cape Verdeans celebrate Christmas
Cape Verde is a mainly Catholic country: in the 2021 census about seven in ten people described themselves as Catholic. Christmas is above all a family and church occasion. On 24 December families gather for a big evening meal, and many go to Midnight Mass, the Missa do Galo, in the parish churches; the churches fill up, and visitors are welcome if they dress respectfully and keep cameras away during the service.
Christmas Day, 25 December, is a public holiday and a quiet one: families visit relatives, offices and banks are closed and many shops close or open only briefly. In the tourist areas of Santa Maria and around the resorts, most restaurants and bars stay open, and hotels organise their own Christmas Eve dinners. If you want to see how a Cape Verdean town lives the season, rather than a resort, a few nights in Mindelo or Praia give a better feel than a week on the beach.
New Year's Eve in Cape Verde: where the parties are
New Year's Eve is when Cape Verde goes out. Town councils organise free open-air concerts with well-known Cape Verdean artists and DJs, and the music usually goes on until dawn. The programmes for 2026/27 had not been announced at the time of writing; they are usually announced only in the last days of December, so the details below describe the most recent edition and show the usual pattern.
In Praia, the capital, the council held the 2025/26 party on Largo da Quebra Canela, by the beach of the same name, from 21:00 to 06:00, with 12 minutes of fireworks at midnight launched from Praça da Cruz de Papa. In Mindelo, the council organised five nights of concerts from 27 to 31 December, one of them on Rua de Lisboa, with the traditional fireworks on the 31st followed by more live music. Read more about the town in our São Vicente and Mindelo guide and about the capital in our Praia guide.
On Sal, the council put on concerts in both Espargos and Santa Maria from 23:00, and on Boa Vista the party was in Sal Rei from 23:00. Smaller towns hold their own: in 2025/26 Ponta do Sol on Santo Antão celebrated with live music and fireworks. Resorts on Sal and Boa Vista organise gala dinners and parties for their guests, often with fireworks over the beach.
Which island for Christmas and New Year?
Sal is the easiest choice: the most direct flights, the calmest swimming in the bay of Santa Maria and a resort town where you can walk from your hotel to restaurants, the pier and the New Year's Eve stage. It suits families and anyone who wants sun first. Read our Santa Maria guide if you want to stay in town rather than in a resort outside it.
Boa Vista is quieter, with long beaches and big all-inclusive resorts far from any town, so the festive season mostly happens inside the hotel. Mindelo on São Vicente has the most atmosphere, with live music most nights, and combines well with walking on Santo Antão, where the trails are dry and green after the autumn rains. Praia throws the biggest public party but is a working capital rather than a beach destination. Compare the options in where to stay in Cape Verde.
Prices and booking for the festive season
The two weeks around Christmas and New Year are the most expensive of the year on Sal and Boa Vista. Package prices rise sharply in the last ten days of December and the first days of January, when school holidays across Europe coincide, and popular hotels and flights from the UK often sell out months ahead. The first half of December, by contrast, is often quiet and noticeably cheaper, with almost the same weather on Sal.
If you book a resort, check what is included over the holidays. Many all-inclusive hotels hold special dinners on 24 and 31 December; some include them, while others charge a supplement or ask you to reserve a table in advance. Restaurants in Santa Maria fill up on those nights too, so book a table early. Budget too for the airport security fee of 3,400 escudos, about €31 per person, paid online when you pre-register on the official EASE platform at least five days before you fly; it is not included in most package prices.
Getting around over the holidays
Inter-island flights and ferries fill up in late December, and delays or cancellations are common at any time of year. If you plan to see the New Year in on another island, book early, avoid relying on a connection on 31 December itself and leave a spare day before your flight home; our island hopping guide explains how the network works.
On Sal and Boa Vista, taxis and aluguer minibuses run on the holidays, but fewer of them, and fares can be higher late at night: agree the price before you get in. After the New Year's Eve concerts, walk back with the crowd along lit streets or take a taxi, and keep phones and cash out of sight in busy squares.
Things to do between Christmas and New Year
The days between the holidays are good for the classic excursions: the salt crater of Pedra de Lume and the Buracona pools on Sal, the lemon sharks at Shark Bay, a 4x4 trip to the dunes of Boa Vista, a catamaran cruise or a first kitesurf lesson now that the wind is back. Turtle nesting is over by December, and humpback whales are not expected until about March. Browse the tours and excursions for ideas and book a few days ahead in the festive weeks.
For something different, combine a few beach days with Mindelo's music bars or a walk on Santo Antão, and try the local food over the holidays, from cachupa to grilled fish; our guide to Cape Verdean food explains what to order. If you are thinking further ahead, the next big date is Carnival in February, covered in our Carnival guide.
