São Vicente, Cape Verde: Mindelo and the island

São Vicente in Cape Verde is small, dry and windswept, but it has the country's most charming town, Mindelo, and its liveliest cultural life. This guide covers Mindelo's music and the legacy of Cesária Évora, Carnival and the Baía das Gatas festival, the island's beaches and viewpoints, and the short ferry to Santo Antão.

São Vicente, Cape Verde: what the island is like

São Vicente is one of the northern (Barlavento) islands, at about 227 km² a small one, with bare volcanic hills and very little rain. Almost everyone lives in Mindelo, which wraps around the deep natural harbour of Porto Grande, a flooded volcanic crater. From the late 1830s British companies turned it into a coaling station for Atlantic steamships, and from 1884 submarine cables made it a communications hub; the town grew around that trade and declined when ships switched to oil. It is still the country's busiest port, and the colonial buildings along the seafront date from those years.

It suits travellers who want a real town with cafés, restaurants, live music and walkable streets, rather than a beach resort. It is also the gateway to the hiking island of Santo Antão, and many visitors combine the two.

Mindelo: music and Cesária Évora

Mindelo is the home of Cesária Évora, the barefoot diva who took morna to the world. She was born in the town in 1941 and died there in 2011, and the airport now bears her name. Morna itself, the slow, melancholic song form of the islands, was added to UNESCO's list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2019. A large mural of Cesária by the Portuguese artist Vhils, unveiled in 2019, stands near the seafront road, and a house museum in her honour is planned in the town.

Music is everywhere in the evenings: restaurants and bars around the centre host live morna and coladeira, and a guitar session can start up anywhere. Read more about the sounds of the islands in food, music and culture.

Things to see in Mindelo

The town is best explored on foot. On the seafront, the Torre de Belém is a replica of Lisbon's famous tower, built in 1920 as the harbour authority's headquarters and now home to the Museu do Mar. Next to it, the fish market is busiest in the morning, when the catch comes in from the boats on the beach.

Inland, the streets around the central squares are lined with colonial houses in pastel colours, the municipal market sells fruit, vegetables and local produce, and the bars around the centre are where the evening starts. The town beach, Laginha, is a short walk from the centre and usually has calm water for a swim with a view of the harbour.

Carnival and the Baía das Gatas festival

Carnival in Mindelo is the largest in Cape Verde. After weeks of smaller parades and preparations, the official groups compete with floats, costumes and drums on Carnival Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday, so the date moves every year: in 2027 it is 9 February. Book flights and rooms well ahead for that week; more in Cape Verde in February. Our Carnival guide covers the parades and how to plan the week.

In August the island's other big event, the Baía das Gatas music festival, fills the bay of the same name on the east coast with concerts and campers over a weekend traditionally timed close to the full moon. Check the municipality's announcements for the exact dates.

Baía das Gatas, São Pedro and Monte Verde

Baía das Gatas, about 8 km east of Mindelo, is a shallow bay protected by a natural rock barrier, which makes it one of the safest places on the island to swim, especially for children. Outside the festival it is quiet, with a few restaurants serving fish.

On the south-west coast near the airport, São Pedro is a fishing village with a long beach known for windsurfing, thanks to strong, steady winds; the waves can be big, so swim with care. On the east coast, the small fishing villages of Calhau and Salamansa make a quiet half-day trip. Compare all the islands' beaches in our beach guide.

Monte Verde, the island's highest point at roughly 750 m, is the one green spot on this dry island. A road leads up the mountain, and on clear days the view takes in Mindelo, the bay and Santo Antão across the channel. Early mornings are clearest; winter haze can hide the view.

The ferry to Santo Antão

Ferries run by CV Interilhas leave Mindelo harbour for Porto Novo on Santo Antão several times a day, with a crossing of about 40 minutes to an hour. The channel is often rough when the trade winds blow, so take seasickness tablets if you need them. Tickets can be bought online or at the port, and it is worth arriving early, as queues can be long. A day trip is possible, but Santo Antão deserves at least two or three nights. See ferries and flights between the islands for the wider network.

Getting there, where to stay and how many days

Cesária Évora Airport, about 9 km south-west of Mindelo, has CVsky inter-island flights to Sal and Praia and direct flights from Europe, including a daily TAP service from Lisbon; check airports and transfers. A taxi to town takes about 15 minutes. Taxis and minibuses are cheap, so there is no need for a car.

Stay in Mindelo itself: small hotels and guesthouses in the centre put restaurants and music within walking distance. The town is also popular with remote workers for its café culture and reliable services; see entry rules if you plan a longer stay, and note that, as in Praia, it is best to take taxis at night outside the busy centre. Two or three days covers Mindelo and the island, plus whatever time you give Santo Antão. Plan routes in where to stay in Cape Verde.
