Cape Verde weather in November on each type of island

On Sal the average high in November is about 28 °C and the low about 23 °C, with roughly 5 mm of rain in the long-term average. That is two or three degrees warmer than in midwinter, with a sea that has barely cooled, which is why November is popular with sun-seekers who find January too breezy. Boa Vista is much the same. The Sal weather guide compares the months in detail.

On Santiago, Santo Antão, Fogo and São Nicolau the rains have ended, but the landscapes are still green from the wet season. That makes November one of the best months for hiking on Santo Antão, with cooler air at height and, between haze episodes, clear views. From about November the Harmattan can also start to bring days of Saharan haze, the bruma seca, which dims the sky and occasionally delays inter-island flights.

Sea and wind in November

The sea around Sal averages about 26 °C in November, warm enough for long swims and snorkelling. The trade winds pick up through the month, heralding the kitesurf season that peaks from about December to May; Kite Beach and Ponta Preta on Sal come back to life. Winter swells also start to reach exposed coasts, so swim in sheltered bays such as Santa Maria and check our beach guide. The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs until 30 November, but storms near Cape Verde this late in the year are rare.

Hatchlings, theatre and what to do in November

The turtle season winds down in November: nesting is over, but the last nests can still hatch through November and into early December. Ask at the Projeto Biodiversidade hatchery in Santa Maria whether nest excavations are still taking place; see turtle watching.

In Mindelo on São Vicente, Mindelact, the international theatre festival, usually takes place in the first half of November, with theatre companies from Cape Verde and abroad; recent editions ran from about 5 to 15 November. Check the festival's programme for exact dates. Hiking, jeep tours and boat trips are all comfortable this month; browse the tours.

November holidays: crowds and prices

Early and mid-November are among the quieter weeks of the winter-sun season, so package prices are usually lower than over Christmas or the February half-term. Prices rise as December approaches. Compare the months in the best time to visit and look ahead to December. If you are already planning the festive season, see Cape Verde at Christmas and New Year.
